What We Believe
- What is the Church of God?
The Church of God, with headquarters in Anderson, Indiana, was started by Daniel S. Warner in 1881 while seeking to restore unity amid the many divisions among Christians of his time. The messsage of unity in Christ continues to ring true in our day as well.
To begin our look at the Church of God, what it is and what it teaches, it is appropriate to ask you to meet us at the cross, for we believe that the cross is the starting point for each Christian. It is there that we come face-to-face with the overwhelming love of God that prompted the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As Paul put it, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8, niv).
The path of every believer meets and proceeds from the cross. There the price for our sins was completely, wonderfully paid. For each of us, faith's journey begins at the foot of that rugged, ancient symbol of redemption.
The name Church of God is used to describe the body of Christ in 1 Corinthians 1:2; 10:32; 11:22; 15:9; 2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:13; and 1 Timothy 3:5.
- Our Statement of Faith -
We believe there is one God who created all things and who exists in the three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that it teaches the truth about Jesus as the source of our salvation and how to live a victorious life in Him.
We believe that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin and lived a sinless life on earth; He was fully God and fully man. As God in the flesh, He taught and performed mighty works, wonders and signs as chronicled in the four Gospels. He was crucified, dying to pay the penalty for our sins. On the third day, God raised Him bodily from the grave. Later, He ascended to the Father's right hand where He is the head of the church and intercedes for believers. We believe that He is coming again, personally, to claim His Church, and to return to the Father's House where He has prepared our eternal home.
We believe the Holy Spirit is at work both to fill the lives of believers with His presence and with the power to live a godly life, and to accomplish God’s will in the world.
We believe that human sin is forgiven only through Jesus Christ and that believing in Him makes you a member of God’s family which does not end with death, but continues for eternity. We believe that the Church consists of all that have trusted Jesus to forgive their sins and live a Spirit-filled life in order to share God’s love with one another and the community.
We believe prayer is the means of communicating with God, who hears and honors the prayers of His people. In prayer, there is power for spiritual life and peace. There is strength and physical healing, for change and life transformation.
